All tournaments with a guaranteed money pot are shotgun start, all shooters must be present and ready to shoot their 1st target at 8:30am – no exceptions will be made. Backwoods Club Tournaments are informal shoots with no prizes being awarded. The USBA Buckle Shoot, ASA State Qualifier, ASA State Championship and Backwoods ASA Club tournaments, and the Blue Ridge Backwoods Classic are money shoots with a guaranteed pot. Actual prizes awarded may exceed the guaranteed amounts depending on overall participation. Guaranteed Pots will be divided proportionally (based on number of shooters in each class) between all adult classes with greater than five participants.

Tournament Rules

ASA Tournament Rules - unless otherwise specified, all outdoor 3D shoots will be governed by the rules of the Archery Shooters Association.  You may visit their web site for addtional information.

Pro / Am Rules - these rules provide the basic rules of the competition.  Additional rules and restrictions may be placed on Federation Shoots.

Federation Rules - these rules are used to govern conduct at State Qualifiers and Championships.

TechnoHunt Rules - the following rules will govern the use of the TechnoHunt system for all shooters in any tournament event.

THE 3D Rules - a system designed around the concept of points awarded for a clean kill and points deducted for body shots (wounds on a real animal).

Example Tournament Prize Distribution

For this example, we will make the following assumptions:

50 Total Participants

$100 Guaranteed Pot

Shooters present in four classes:

Open            15
Bowhunter    25
Novice            5
Womens Open    3
Traditional    2

The Pot is then divided amongst the top finishers in each class.  This is done using a spreadsheet that is made available by the ASA - this is used to award cash prizes in every ASA competition.  A portion of this spreadsheet is made available here for reference:

  NUMBER OF SHOOTERS = 1
PLACES UP TO
PAID #SHOOTERS 1 2 3 4 5
1 5 100
2 10 66.67 33.33
3 15 50 33.33 16.67
4 20 40 30 20 10
5 25 33.33 26.67 20 13.33 6.67

All of this information is placed into a spreadsheet similar to the following (this has been simplified for presentation on the web):

Payout Limit 5
Pot Size   $100     Total Pot for Each Class
Participants 50 45
Open   15 15 33.33% $33.33
Bowhunter 25 25 55.56% $55.56
Novice   5 5 11.11% $11.11
Womens   2 0 0.00% $0.00
Traditional 3 0 0.00% $0.00

Open
1st 2nd 3rd
$16.67 $11.11 $5.56

Bowhunter
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th
$18.52 $14.82 $11.11 $7.41 $3.71

Novice
1st
$11.11

As you can see - the payouts are best for the biggest classes.  The bigger classes also pay much "deeper" into the field than the smaller classes.
